A glimpse of the History of Prayagraj

The city finds its earliest mentions in the Rigveda and the Pali scripture, Majjhima Nikaya. The location at the confluence of the Ganges and the Yamuna has been known as “Prayaga”  which means sacrifice. Prayagraj was also known as Kosambi in later Vedic times, named by the Kuru rulers of Hastinapur, who made it their capital. Prayagraj was also one of the bustling cities till the later Mauryan Period. Since then, the city has been a political, cultural and administrative centre of the Doab (land between the Ganga and the Yamuna) region.

Prayagraj or Allahabad was a provincial capital in the Mughal empire under the reign of Jahangir. It is said that Mughal Emperor, Akbar laid the foundation of the city, then known as Ilahabas, which was later changed to Allahabad by Shah Jahan.

Prayagraja is also one of the sites for the world-famous Kumbha Mela- the largest gathering of people on a pilgrimage. Let us look at the reasons which make Kumbh Mela special.

What is so special about Kumbh Mela?

The origin of Kumbha Mela lies in mythology. It is said that the Devtas (deities) and the Asuras (demons) worked together towards a common goal of “churning the sea” or “Samudra Manthan” which was believed would provide Amrit (Nectar) that would grant immortality to anyone who drinks it.

‘Kumbh” means the pot in which the Amrit was stored. When the Kumbh came out of the churning, Lord Vishnu fooled the demons and gave the pot to the deities. As the Lord took it, a few drops of Amrit fell at four places on the earth, which wereblessed, and these four places are the sites where Kumbh Mela is held. It is believed that the rivers at these sites were also blessed and whoever takes a dip in these blessed rivers will attain Moksha or Nirvana.

The four river sites are Prayagraj (theconfluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati), Haridwar (the site of the Ganga River), Nashik (theGodavari River) and Ujjain (the site ofthe Shipra River). These became the sites where Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years in rotation.
